Seeds of Health charter school Veritas High School launches student travel club
MILWAUKEE (Nov. 1, 2017) – Seeds of Health charter school Veritas High School is thrilled to announce the inception of its student travel club, kicking it off with an international trip to China.
Created by Veritas High School English Teacher Joe Neman, the travel club was established to give students the unique opportunity to travel globally and acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding of international issues; an appreciation of, and the ability to learn and work with people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds; a proficiency in a foreign language; and garner the skills necessary to function in a foreign country.
“The Veritas Travel Club has opened up the eyes of our students to the world outside of Milwaukee while teaching them that goals and dreams can be achieved through effort and teamwork,” said Veritas High School Principal Sherry Tolkan. “This club was Joe’s dream for our students and he worked tirelessly for years to make it a reality.”
Twelve students, representing all class levels, and two teacher chaperones spent 10 days exploring Beijing, Shanghai and XI’AN. Trip highlights include climbing the Great Wall of China, tasting different native foods, exploring the streets of Beijing, bargaining at the markets and enjoying the futuristic city of Shanghai.
“Students came back from the trip with more confidence, maturity and a great appreciation for a world outside their own every-day life,” said English Teacher Joe Neman. “It was an incredible experience of a lifetime.”
The travel club plans to do an international trip every other year and a national trip in between. Next May, the club plans to go to Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. The next international trip is still in the works, however students have already expressed interest in seeing Spain, Japan or Costa Rica. Students are able to participate in several various fundraisers to secure necessary funds for travel club trips over the course of their four years at Veritas High School. They can participate in as many trips as they like.
